Position Summary:
Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare is seeking interested nursing students to join our Enhanced Extern Program. This is an exciting employment opportunity for these students to work in a clinical environment where they can develop and consolidate competencies to prepare to transition into a future registered role upon completion of their studies. The Clinical Extern may be considered for career opportunities upon graduation and licensure.
The Clinical Extern will be working in the capacity as unregulated health care provider. The Clinical Externs work in collaboration with all team members and provide patient-centered care under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an identified Health Professional and who report to the unit manager. The Clinical Extern will practice in a manner consistent with the organizational values in alignment with the outlined job description, while considering the limitations in their ability to perform controlled acts as authorized by the professional colleges.
Externs will be hired on contract, during which the Extern will work part time. The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on the unit needs and may include day/evening/ night and weekend shifts.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be one of the following:
· RPN student in any year of study
· Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
· Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
· Effective interpersonal and communication skills
· Successful completion of a recent clinical placement
· Ability to communicate in a confidential, professional, diplomatic and friendly manner when interacting with patients, families, staff, physicians, students and volunteers
· Ability to work as a member of a team and request guidance and consultation
· Acquired competencies to provide safe, high quality and compassionate care reflective of level of formal education and in accordance with organizational Mission and Vision
· Demonstrated critical thinking skills including clinical judgement, problem solving, and evaluation skills reflective of level of formal education
· Demonstrated attitude and behavior that conveys respect and dignity of all persons
